Final Project: The Journey of Womanhood

Concept
Our piece represents the journey of womanhood and the trials, tribulations, and celebrations universally associated with being a woman. The piece embodies and reflects shared experiences in our own personal journeys navigating the world as women from childhood to adulthood. 

Process  
Our standing structure
We were mainly projecting onto geometric shapes/structures for our previous projects, so for a change, we wanted to work with organic shapes and flowing materials for our final. We started off by building a canvas to project onto. We needed a structure where we could hang fabric and other materials. Denise had an old room divider that she brought in for us to use as the base structure. The rice paper had peeled off, so we had to rebuild the covering for the divider. Using a thin, almost translucent paper, we covered the outer panels and left the middle panel open. We didn't want to cover all the panels because we liked how the light fell onto the wall behind the structure. 
The grid pattern on the divider gave a cage-like feeling to the structure, which symbolizes the societal pressures from outside forces, such as the media and authority figures, on women. It also gave a hologram illusion to the projected animations and the sheer fabric hung at the front also added to this 3D effect. 

Experimenting with Kinect
For this project, we wanted to experiment with the Kinect, so that we could add some interactive components to our piece. However, we had a hard time installing OpenNI on the Mac, so we decided to do all our Kinect work on a PC instead. Unfortunately, we weren't able to figure out OpenNI on our PC either (we were all new to working with the Kinect), so we decided to work with what we knew and what we could achieve for the time we had available. In the end, we utilized Processing 3 and integrated Daniel Shiffman's OpenKinect library to achieve a pixellated effect. Next, we filmed the dance through the Kinect several times and screen captured the output window to record our choreography. The filmed routines were then further edited and manipulated through After Effects. We also integrated a few videos that Denise created using different glitching methods. 


Magic Music Visualizer

Magic Music Visualizer was used to create dynamic and interactive content for the music. The speed and size of the particles of our background animation was controlled by the volume of the music. The magic output window was syphoned into Modul8, so that we could apply various effects/filters on the animations. Finally, all content was syphoned, aggregrated, and composed back in MadMapper into individual layers for mapping purposes.

Syphon allows the user to directly send the output of a Processing Sketch into MadMapper, or equivalent program. It only exists for Mac. Here’s how to get it working.

Assignment 04: Projection Mapping Proposal

For this project, I scouted 2 locations in the Arts and Technology (ATEC) building and used a previous location from my trip to Europe with my grandmother during summer 2006 (nearly 10 years ago).


Gamer Steps (ATEC Lobby):
Concept - The ATEC program offers courses in video game development and, thus, consists of many "gamers". I wanted to create a space where students could play side scroller video games against one another. The game I chose for this was Super Mario Bros due to the availability of the full side scroller level maps.

Philip Barker: Assignment 4



As I was on my trip in Seattle I decided that it would be a good opportunity to find locations for this project. Seattle has an array of buildings and public areas that could benefit from this type of art form.

This space is the Indie Game Revolution exhibit at the EMP Museum in Seattle. When walking into this space I was amazed by this sculpture. The lighting and the layout were really cool but I felt the sculpture was lacking. The sculpture was designed to give the sense of a pixelated world but the sculpture is static. 


This is part of the outside for the EMP Museum. The building itself it one large structure with multiple designs. The craziness of the buildings design gave me a sense of opposites. The left side is metallic organic and the right a glossy curve made of rectangles.


For my final location I decided to use the Founders building near the plinth. I was hoping to find a third location in Seattle but ended getting too wrapped up in my trip. Each time I would walk through the plinth I would see founders glowing panels and a group of people dancing inside. I would see the LED on the extended panels and would think that they were pulsing. In fact on closer inspection they were solid. This time the panels were not glowing.
