Michael Bradley: Pepakura

Model

This model is another variation on my Reek Mudbox Sculpt.  The creatures head was removed from the relief frame, and after trying several different options for reducing polygons, I settled on a simple poly reduction in Maya, to about 800 polys.  The horns were remade from scratch in Maya.  The model was the meticulously unwrapped in Pep 4, and then laid back out in Rhino.

Construction

The construction process was fairly normal for this project.  I started with the horns and built out from them, gluing each of the 4-500 tabs individually with loctite professional.  Some seams were difficult to close, so I used small clamps, and occasionally heavy duty magnets, to hold them in place while the glue set.

Painting

Rather than masking the seams with tape, I decided to attempt to plastidip the entire sculpture in the hope that it would seal every seam and fill every hole.  After 4 cans, it did not do it completely, however I am confident that 1 or 2 more cans would have done the trick.  I also had difficulty with the cold weather, which caused some irregularities in the plastidip finish.  The final coat was done with a Rustoleum chrome metallic spray paint.
