Casting

Concept for first Cast

As with most of my artwork, I usually go where it takes me. I play around with it  until it creates itself. When this model started coming together, the harsh red, black, and green hues complimenting each other reminded me of something old and decaying. When I added the touch of gold, it started clawing out of that look of death, and sort of turned into something alive. I perceive this piece to represent “clawing out of death, reigning into life”.

Technique

At first glance, this cast was just a messy slush casting of bright red. I was going to use it as a “practice” mold, but all I did was lightly dry brush different complimenting colors like dark green, black, adding in a bit more red, then damping it down, and so forth. Then I swiped in some gold, and the whole thing just popped. I then (with help) drilled in some holes, and pushed in little spikes I bought at a jewelry section of Michael’s for this sole reason. I personally like the arching line of gold towards the bottom of the bust in opposite of the vertical spikes on the model’s head.

Concept for Second Cast

When this cast came out of the mold half off-white, and half purple, I was unhappy with it, so I decided to say, ‘F it’, and do whatever I wanted to it. I didn’t expect spilling another batch of resin would have such a cool effect.

An important lesson I learned during this project is that EVERY FAILURE CAN BE SAVED!

Technique

To get this “Carrie” look, I poured a separate batch of resin dyed with a mixture of red and purple. Unfortunately, the two colors separated as they spilled down. Fortunately, I was able to add more depth and dimension to it by painting over it with primary red, and then adding in tones of dark green and filling in with black. As you can see in the top three photos, the bottom also used to be purple, but I color matched the ‘cream’ color of the rest of the mold (default white Rebound 320) and painted over it.

Concept for First Relief Cast

For this cast, I actually intended for it to turn out like this. It wasn’t que sera sera. I really wanted to incorporate nature and words like “old”, “forgotten”, and “abandoned”. As I was painting this piece, I was reminded of the stone spirits from Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli)’s film, Spirted Away.

Casting Technique

I bought some jewel-making pearls, and a fake stem of baby’s breath flowers from Michael’s craft store, and caste a mold from clear Rebound.

Moss Technique

In this example, I used a practice cast to create a ‘moss’ effect for one of my molds. The trick is to add textures up textures, and layers upon layers of paint until satisfied. The last step is to blend the colors and textures into the cast.

Continuing the Theme of "old", "forgotten", and "abandoned".

I first casted just the model itself in clear rebound. Then, I used a dropper tool to drop different colors of rebound to make swirl-like patterns on the platform it’s laying on.
